Metro Access: Shirlington is not close to a metro stop but buses feeding into the Pentagon transfer station are plentiful, and commuting downtown from Shirlington is easy by car.
Interstate Access: Shirlington has its own exit from I-395 (locals call it Shirley Highway), and access is a breeze north to downtown DC and all points south of the city.
Closest Attractions: While Shirlington doesn’t offer a major attraction in its own right, Shirlington is close to Old Town Alexandria Washington DC.
Restaurants: The Village at Shirlington, a lovely outdoor mall, offers a great variety of dining possibilities in a very compact area. Carlyle consistently earns top marks for brunch and innovative bistro fare. The Capital City Brewing Company has an outpost here, and you’ll find tapas, Thai, Chinese, Mexican, and a good selection of delis and bakeries to round out one of the best dining centers in Northern Virginia.
Dry Cleaning: Cleaners, groceries and other services cluster on nearby King Street and Four Mile Run Drive.
Gym: The Village at Shirlington offers a Curves, and all the major fitness operators have locations nearby on King Street or Glebe Road.
Neighborhood Description: Shirlington has enjoyed a resurgence and now bills itself as “Arlington’s New Downtown.” Shirlington delivers a wide array of new condo and townhouse developments, clustered around the Village at Shirlington. Locals enjoy walking to the art house movie theater and outdoor brunch at Carlyle. Other features include the nearby Washington and Old Dominion Trail, which begins at Shirlington and continues for forty-five miles into rural Virginia.
Number of Homes: Much of the development in Shirlington is brand new, and a major new phase of development has begun that will lengthen the retail strip and add hundreds of new condo units. The surrounding neighborhoods feature modest single family homes and older condo buildings.
