Georgetown - Washington DC
Metro Access: Georgetown is famous for having no metro access. An urban legend has it that concerned Georgetown residents rejected metro in an effort to maintain the peace and quiet. In reality, the geology of Georgetown made metro cost-prohibitive.
Interstate Access: The scenic Key Bridge provides easy access to I-66, the GW Parkway, and I-395.
Closest Attractions: Georgetown itself is a major attraction with its colonial-era homes, stately parks, and great shopping. Georgetown University perches on a bluff overlooking the Potomac, and the C&O Canal towpath trail runs from Georgetown all the way to West Virginia, attracting bikers and runners. Canoeing and rowing on the Potomac are also great Georgetown traditions.
Restaurants: The Georgetown restaurant scene ranges from culinary landmarks like Citronelle and 1789 to the riverside out-of-town visitor-friendly Sequoia and Tony & Joe’s, with a wide array of typically Washingtonian ethnic restaurants in the mix.
Dry Cleaning: Along Wisconsin Avenue you’ll find a wide array of dry cleaners, and the so-called “Social Safeway” is just up Wisconsin Avenue.
Gym: Washington Sports Club has a branch right on M St., and all the downtown fitness clubs are a short jog away.
Neighborhood Description: The intersection of Wisconsin Ave. and M St. in Georgetown has long been a center of Washington nightlife and shopping. Still fashionable, and having undergone a substantial facelift, Georgetown attracts visitors in droves on the weekends for brunch by the river, a boutique shopping spree, or a stroll through the leafy neighborhoods. The furthest navigable point on the Potomac River, Europeans first settled in Georgetown in 1696, and it became a thriving tobacco port. Today, many of Washington’s elite call Georgetown home.
Number of Homes: Many Georgetown homes date back to the 18th century and are typically set in rows, with little or no front yard, but often with enough space in back for a peaceful garden. Along the river modern condominium developments command fantastic views and offer modern amenities.
