Capitol Hill - Washington DC

Metro Access:  Capitol South, Eastern Market, Stadium Armory, and Union Station metro stops all provide easy access to different sections of Capitol Hill.

Interstate Access:  I-395 runs along the south side of Capitol Hill, and Pennsylvania Avenue provides access to I-295 and points north and south.

Closest Attractions:  The Supreme Court and the U.S. Capitol rest on the western edge of the Capitol Hill neighborhood.  On weekends Eastern Market attracts artisans who cluster in white-tented booths outside the historic market building.  Inside are some of DC finest traditional butchers and fish mongers.  RFK stadium houses the Washington Nationals baseball team and the DC United soccer team.  Construction has begun on a new baseball park, which will be a quick walk from many sections of Capitol Hill.  Lincoln Park is a favorite spot for dog owners and frisbee throwers.

Restaurants:  Barracks Row, named for the Marine barracks on the south end of 8th St., has recently emerged as a new center of dining and nightlife on “The Hill.”  Pennsylvania Ave. also has a cluster of good restaurants and pubs, which teem with Hill staffers during happy hour.  Notable spots include Belga Café on Barracks Row for mussels and DC’s best selection of Belgian beer, and Bistro Bis for great French fare on the other side of The Hill near Union Station.  Reliable local spots include Las Placitas for Salvadoran treats and the Tune Inn for one of the best local dives in town.

Dry Cleaning:  Along the commercial strips on Pennsylvania Ave. and 8th St. you’ll fine cleaners, pharmacies and all of the essentials.  New groceries are in the works for Pennsylvania Avenue, and Eastern Market is a great place to shop for your week’s vegetables, meat, and fish.

Gym:  Results Gym has a branch in a former school on Capitol Hill.  Curves has a branch on 8th St.

Neighborhood Description:  Capitol Hill stretches for blocks and blocks north and south as you travel along East Capitol Street.  The neighborhood grew up around the new Capitol Building in the early 19th century and continued to expand with the government.  Today, the Federal Government continues to dominate Capitol Hill life and is home to many members of congress and their staffers.

Number of Homes:  Stately mansions and modest row houses, mostly from the 19th century line leafy avenues throughout Capitol Hill.  Condo options exist, primarily older construction or in large divided Victorians.  Capitol Hill is one of the largest neighborhoods in DC and each block has a unique character.
